July 7th- Brunello and Siena

Morning comes and it is time to leave Piacenza and head to Toscano. The town of Montalcino is our destination. Home of Italy's Brunello (Sangiovese clone).

Going through Siena....we will be staying there for the next few nights

Through Chianti Classico.....

Entering Col D' Orcia in Montalcino. They are a relatively medium production facility of high quality Brunello.

Different size barriques for slower aging and oak surface area.

Tasting barrel samples and futures...

During a small lecture on the winery and Brunello region, we tasted the available lineup of wines that are available for sale.

Prof. Fugelsang, Cody, and I all swirl for the camera.

Our room in Siena.....

The view down the street outside of Siena..

After unpacking our stuff we had to check out downtown Siena before dark.....

Most of Siena's infrastructure was established when horses were the main vehicle for travel.

Dinner and World Cup.

Italian cities come alive at night.....

At midnight the winners of the traditional Palio (horse race) come out and celebrate by beating drums, waving flags, and chanting. Later in the week we end up having dinner with the leaders of this tribe. they celebrate all month until the next race.
